Alla prima is Italian for "at the first" or "all at once". With this approach the painter strives to create a finished painting (or study) in one sitting. Alla prima paintings are often characteristic of unfinished areas and organic brush character. I enjoy doing these fairly quick sketches both for practice and for their sheer charm. All of the studies below were done in three hours or less.
